Ellected - with Jyoti Gondek

Welcome to Ellected – the podcast about women in politics, by women in politics, and for anyone who supports women in politics.

In Episode 10 of Ellected, host Sarah Elder-Chamanara and Calgary mayoral hopeful Jyoti Gondek discuss what it means to be qualified in politics as a woman, Jyoti's experiences on council with community stakeholders, what she hopes Calgary will become, a tragic conversation she had about child care that changed her perspective, and more.

Jyoti Gondek has been the Ward 3 Councillor for the city of Calgary since 2017 and is currently running in the 2021 municipal election with hopes of filling the mayor's chair.

In addition to representing the needs of several north central Calgary communities, Jyoti chairs the City of Calgary’s Standing Policy Committee on Planning and Urban Development and is a member of the Priorities and Finance Committee.

Prior to taking office in 2017, Jyoti was the Director of the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. Jyoti also served on Calgary Planning Commission, as well as holding board and advisory positions with the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Alberta, the National Executive Forum on Public Property, and Calgary Economic Development’s Commercial Real Estate Committee. Jyoti holds a PhD in urban sociology.

Sarah Elder-Chamanara is the founder, creative director and owner of Madame Premier, a feminist and political clothing company based in Calgary, Alberta. With the underlying principle of seeing more women and diversity in politics, elected and in backrooms, at every level, Madame Premier creates the opportunity for conversations about why politics needs to change. Madame Premier has been featured in the National Post, CBC, Forbes and Toronto Star. Sarah is currently planning on opening Madame Premier’s first retail location in summer 2021 in Calgary.
